Pray for Mission Trips

We'll have hundreds of students and adults on mission in the coming weeks. Our fifth graders just came home from Sapulpa, OK, our 6-8 graders are in Turrell, AR, our 9-10 graders are in St. Louis, MO, and our high schoolers are serving in Denver, CO. Each of these places of service are strategic areas for our church and ongoing parnterships. Not only are we praying for the students and adults that are on mission, but for their work in these strategic areas. Please join me in praying for these students and adults. Pray for:

Persons going on the mission trips must find their individual purpose for being on that trip. Whether they realize it or not, they are on that particular trip in that particular place in the world at that particular time for a specific purpose. Sometimes they can believe that they are on the trip for one reason and then later realize they were actually on the trip for a different reason. Finding the purpose is important to accomplishing the mission. Queen Esther discovered her purpose after she was already queen and the moment arose when she needed to step into that purpose. "If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?" (Esther 4:14)

In preparing for the trip and living out the trip, each missionary will need provisions. First with the money to go on the trip and for incidentals, souvenirs, or maybe even an offering to the church they will be visiting. "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)

The missions group will need your prayers for protection, both from the spiritual and the natural (illnesses, etc.). Pray for safety as they are on the road and as they are out in the communities. Also, pray for all to get proper rest and nutrition and to stay healthy.

Spiritual Growth

The person going on this short term mission trip must be spending time with the Lord every day through the duration of this mission. Pray that God would use these times to grow them in their relationship with the Lord.

A mission trip is certainly not the time or place to defy the authority figure or leader of the group. Submission to the authority keeps everyone safe and encourages the unity of the spirit. "...Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!" (Philippians 2:2-8)

Spiritual Gifts

The student or adult going on the mission trip will need to know, or at least identify, their spiritual gifts so that they can be used for God's glory.  "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord." (1 Corinthians 12:5) Please read all of 1 Corinthians 12 for clarity.

We desire to see spiritual fruit in each student and adult that goes on mission, but we also desire to see the fruit of lost people coming to know Jesus.  John 15:8 says, "This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

Here is a sample prayer for mission trips:

God, I thank you for the opportunity for _______ to serve you on the mission field. I thank you that _______has taken your commission of Matthew 28:18 to go into all the world preaching the gospel and leading people to you, Lord. Father I ask that you would first provide for ________ miraculously.  Cover all the costs of this trip over and above and let it be in abundance so that _________ will be able to bless others on the trip as well as the churches and places that he/she will visit while on this trip.  I pray that you will give ________ a submissive heart to authority and bring the unity of the spirit and the bond of peace among the entire group.  Let the mind that is in Christ be also in all of them. Let none do anything out of selfish ambition but that they will all look to the well being of others.  Give them a servant's heart and spirit as you had, Jesus. I pray that your Holy Spirit will lead and guide them along the way.  Reveal your spiritual gifts to __________ that you have placed within him/her to be used for your glory.  Cause ________ to be your hands and feet, Jesus, ministering to the least of these.  I pray for good health throughout the entire trip and safety in the community.  Make _______ mindful of what he/she is eating.  Reveal your purpose for ______ on this trip. May he/she be fully aware of your purpose and be used to the fullness of it. Make your giftings abound to carry out the purpose. May he/she submit to your spirit and give honor and glory to your name at all times. May he/she see real fruit in their lives and use him/her to produce fruit. I pray that you, God, would be glorified from the fruit produced on this trip.  Watch over them, Lord, from their rising up to their laying down.  Grant them all peace and a successful trip, in Jesus Name, Amen.
